The more research I do on the benefits of natural remedies, the more I want to use them. I love knowing that I can keep my body healthy and deal with occasional problems by just looking at what nature has to offer. Some of my favorite products to use are coconut oil, raw honey and essential oils. Putting them all into this Soothing Coconut Oil Tea is a triple threat to help keep your body feeling and working at it’s best. Did I mention that it’s yummy? Well, it is.
Fortunately, we’re pretty healthy around here thanks to good eating, regular exercise and my trusty essential oils. But once in a while someone comes home feeling yucky and last Friday it was farm kid #2 . He was feeling much better in just a couple of days and went back to school on Monday. One of the things I gave him to help support his immune system was this coconut oil tea. It’s a wonderfully soothing and delicious tea that, in his words, made him feel better. He slept through the night with no problems and asked for it again the following night. Here’s what’s in coconut oil tea and why:
Coconut Oil–50% of the fatty acid in coconut oil is Lauric Acid. And when coconut oil is digested it forms the monoglyceride monolaurin. Both lauric acid and monolaurin can support the body’s immune system in fighting off bacteria and viruses.
Raw Honey–great for soothing an occasional cough or sore throat, honey also strengthens the white blood cells, helping them fight off bacterial and viral infections.
Lemon Essential Oil–naturally cleanses the body and aides in digestion, supports healthy respiratory function, helps ward off free radicals with its antioxidant benefits, soothes an irritated throat.
Lime Essential Oil--supports healthy immune function, used as an aromatic and internal cleanser, promotes emotional balance and well-being.
Coconut Oil Tea
1 mug of hot (not boiling) water
1 tbsp. coconut oil
1/2 tbsp. raw honey
5 drops lemon essential oil
5 drops lime essential oil
Heat water up just enough so coconut oil and honey will melt. Do not boil as that will compromise the benefits of the raw honey and the essential oils. Add coconut oil and honey to hot water and stir until dissolved. Add essential oils. Drink immediately. Repeat as often as desired but definitely before bedtime.
Note: this is a great tea to drink every day to help boost your body’s immune system. Both coconut oil and raw honey have been shown to support the body’s immunity so it just might help keep you from getting sick in the first place. You can use other essential oils but start with just a drop or two as they vary in strength. Some of my favorites you might want to try are:
sleep support–1-2 drops roman chamomile EO
digestive support–1 drop peppermint or ginger EO
immune support–1-2 drops wild orange EO
- 1 mug of hot (not boiling) water
- 1 tbsp. coconut oil
- 1/2 tbsp. raw honey
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
- 5 drops lime essential oil
- Heat water up just enough so coconut oil and honey will melt. Do not boil as that will compromise the medicinal benefits of the raw honey and the essential oils.
- Add coconut oil and honey to hot water and stir until dissolved.
- Add essential oils.
- Drink immediately.
- Repeat as often as desired but definitely before bedtime.

My cold/flu tea is from the Amish store:
leaf nettles, peppermint, yarrow, red raspberry, alfalfa.
Boil two TB in cup water; strain and drink.
Haven’t tried it yet–we are a healthy family, never sick.
It is sealed in a quart jar.

Nicola says
Stupid question but can you use lemon & lime fresh juice instead of oil in these? Thanks!
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hi Nicola–don’t worry, there are no stupid questions here. You could use lemon and lime juice in this tea but you won’t be getting the medicinal power of the plants which are found in the essential oils. The essential oil of the citrus fruits are cold-pressed from the rind and are a completely different chemical compound than the fruit/juice. The essential oils of citrus are not sour because, unlike the juice, they contains no citric acid. What the oils do contain are hundreds of chemical constituents, including phenols, terpenes, esters and oxides which provide various benefits to the body including stimulating the immune system to produce more white blood cells. As long as you’re using essential oils that say FOR DIETARY USE on the bottle, I would definitely recommend using EO’s for this recipe instead of juice. Hope that helps.
