Sometimes there are monsters in your room. Not always but sometimes. Usually they hide under the bed but the closet is also a favorite hangout as are dark hallways and stairwells. In the house I grew up in there was a monster that lived inside the toilet. It only came out when someone had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I never risked it and developed unbelievable bladder control at a very young age. But nowadays kids have it easier due to the life-changing invention of Anti-Monster Spray. Modern technology really is a miracle!
I’ve seen lots of recipes for anti-monster spray that just use a decorated spray bottle and water. I’ve heard some witches are afraid of water but monsters definitely are not. Monsters are only afraid of things that help children fall asleep because once a child falls asleep the monster has nothing to do but go home.
One of those sleep-inducing ingredients is lavender essential oil. Monsters hate it because they know lavender is great at helping kids be calm and fall asleep so when they smell it they just give up and leave. It’s good to add some witch hazel to repel any witches that might be hanging around plus it helps the essential oil and water stay together. You can go one step further and add a tiny bit of aloe vera gel as it emulsifies the mixture even further. You still need to shake the bottle before use, which will ensure that every spray is filled with monster-repelling lavender.
Lavender EO is widely used for its calming and relaxing properties. It eases muscle tensions and may help with occasional sleeplessness. It’s also great to put directly on the bottoms of your feet or the base of your spine because no monster will come near you if you smell like lavender. But lavender essential oil isn’t the only smell that monsters hate so if you don’t like that smell here are some other options:
Vetiver EO–calming and grounding effect on emotions, immune enhancing properties.
Wild Orange EO–protects against seasonal and environmental threats, calming to the mind and body.
Roman Chamomile EO–has a therapeutic and calming effect on the mind and body, soothes the systems of the body.
Use these essential oils singly or in any combination you choose. They all smell wonderful but not to monsters.
Thankfully, monsters don’t seem to be such a nuisance for older kids and adults. But difficulty sleeping plagues everyone at sometime or another so I think it’s a good idea to keep a little anti-monster spray around no matter how old you are. A few sprays around the room and on the pillows can help anyone fall asleep before the monsters ever show up.
I also keep a bottle in my bathroom and everyone sprays a little on top of the toilet water before going #2. With a house full of men I’ve learned that there are some monsters you can smell long after their gone. Anti-monster spray works at repelling them all.
Anti-Monster Spray
1 1/2 cups distilled water
1/2 cup witch hazel (not the alcohol-free kind)
1/4 tsp. aloe vera gel (optional)
20-25 drops lavender essential oil
Combine all ingredients in a 16 ounce glass spray bottle (I prefer glass). Shake very well to combine. When you think it’s done shake some more (about one minute total). Use as necessary to repel monsters.

Cute idea – I use similar sprays as room fresheners and it works great! 🙂 gentlejoyhomemaker.blogspot.com

Thanks Gentle Joy (love your name)! This idea actually came from my son while we were making a batch of All-Natural Room & Linen Spray. He wanted to use lavender and I protested saying it would make everyone sleepy. His reply? “Just wait until bedtime and then spray it all over the house. Then everyone will sleep better and the house will smell good”. Genius!

That is so awesome. My son was telling me how he was nervous about monsters while we were waiting at the DMV. The guy next to us (without skipping a beat) explained to my son that his brother was a police officer whose job it was to take all the monsters in Maine and take them to Connecticut. My son bought it. Now it’s our standby thing. Heaven forbid he ever meet anyone from Connecticut LOL.

This is a great recipe thanks for sharing. Lavender is great for kids and apparently so are oils like mandarin. We used to make our own and keep it in the fridge, but then we found this one which our little one loves. https://brambleandblossom.co.uk/products/little-monster-spray you but just as easy to make yours! 🙂
