Is there anything better then a friend or neighbor bringing you an unexpected treat? Not much except when that lovely person gives you the recipe. And she gives it to you verbally because there’s only three ingredients. And it just so happens that you have all three ingredients in your kitchen at the same time. Does life get any sweeter than that? I don’t think so.
How can you not love a recipe with just a few easy to find ingredients? I make my own homemade Oreo cookies (hmmm…a future post?) but they take some effort and I can’t bring myself to crush them up for another recipe where they won’t get the proper attention they deserve. So this time it’s Nabisco to the rescue.
If you can work a food processor, you can make Oreo Truffles. Okay, honestly I only use my food processor once or twice a year so when I get it out it takes me a few minutes to figure out how to get the bowl on the base. I look like a total amateur and it probably means that I won’t be getting a show on the Food Network anytime soon. But I did finally get it together, both literally and figuratively, and from there it was a piece of cake (or truffle). Blend all the cookies you haven’t eaten (Shhh, I ate 5 but the recipe turned out okay anyway) then add in the cream cheese and presto…truffle filling.
Sometimes, especially around Christmas time, I like to magically turn Oreo Truffles into Oreo Mint Truffles. I actually don’t really like magic so I’ll give away my secret: peppermint essential oil.
I only use and recommend essential oils that are therapeutic grade, which means they can be taken internally. If you use a different brand just make sure it says FOR INTERNAL USE on the bottle.
The dough is kind of weird to work with but don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it. After you form them into a bunch of small, misshapen balls you have to put them in the freezer. My sweet friend didn’t tell me to do this but when I tried to roll the unfrozen balls in the very warm chocolate they kinda, sorta completely fell apart. Freezing them did the trick. I only take half of the truffles out at a time so the other half can stay as frozen as possible. Sometimes in the kitchen you just learn things the hard way.
Rolling the truffles in the melted chocolate is a messy business. Oh, that all messy businesses were this much fun! Remember that they don’t have to look perfect. This ain’t See’s Candies people! You want them to look homemade so that some big candy conglomerate doesn’t get all your well-deserved credit.
I can’t bring you a plate of these yummy Oreo Truffles (I would if I could, really). But now you can make make them yourself and bring a plate to one of your friends or family members or neighbors or co-workers, the list is endless. Spread the love people, spread the love (but always keep a little for yourself 🙂
Oreo Truffles
1 bag Oreo Cookies
1- 8 oz. package cream cheese, room temp.
10 oz. chocolate chips
2 tbsp. canola oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)
Break Oreo cookies in half and put in food processor. Blend until cookies form a powder. Cut cream cheese into chunks and add to cookies in food processor. Blend until mixture forms a wet dough. Roll dough into small balls and put on a freezer-safe tray lined with wax paper. Freeze truffle balls. Place the chocolate chips and oil in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals until chocolate is melted. Stir until smooth. Remove truffle balls from the freezer. Roll each ball in the melted chocolate and carefully remove with two spoons. Place the truffle back on the wax paper lined tray and continue with remaining truffles. For best results, keep refrigerated.
Makes approx. 40 truffles.

Thanks Robin, they are!
Erika Stover says
Tried them…LOVED THEM!!! These are much better than the ones that use mint Oreos. The peppermint oil makes all the difference! Thanks for sharing!
Fabulous Farm Girl says
I agree Erika! I love Oreos but the mint Oreos never taste right to me. The doTERRA essential oils is definitely the way to go if you want the mint chocolate version. Thanks for stopping by!
Kalliste says
These look great and so easy! Just wondering, how many biscuits do you get in a pack of oreos? Just want to make sure it’s the same amount here.
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hi Kalliste! Now you’ve got me wondering where “here” is. You called cookies biscuits which makes me think England but wherever you are thanks for stopping by. I used the regular size pack of Oreos which contain 36 cookies (of which I at 5). Hopefully you have more willpower than I do. Have a fabulous week!

I wondered whether I should call them cookies 😛 Here is Australia. I don’t think ours has that many in it but then I don’t usually count oreos I just eat them 😀

Hi Meaghan–thanks for stopping by. You are right in that they are darker on the inside than I expected them to be but to be honest they are also waaayyy more more delicious than I expected them to be. I love happy surprises. Have a great day!
