Welcome Outdoor Enthusiast!
So glad you stopped by my little neck of the woods.
Do you love being outside as much as I do? Do you love the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, the dirt under your feet, the…bugs biting your skin? Wait…what?
Yeah, no one loves that part. That’s why I (okay, my husband) created this amazing Anti-Itch Cream.
Once you try it, you’ll never leave home without it.
There are about a million things that can cause itchy skin, some obvious and some a complete mystery. My most recent scratch-fest wasn’t a mystery at all but caused by that trusted old stand-by, the mosquito. Well, I think.
I had gone on an evening hike with my family and the next day I started scratching more than a dozen mosquito bites all over my upper legs. At least, they looked like mosquito bites but on the hike I had worn long pants and a jacket.
How on earth did I get bit so many times with so many clothes on? I hadn’t seen any mosquitoes in the air during the hike and I had been indoors the rest of the day. Had I been bitten by something else?
Something worse? Fleas? Bed bugs?
Oh man, please don’t let it be bedbugs!
Then my husband handed me an old prescription bottle filled with a white mystery cream. “Use this” he said. “It’s my homemade after-shave cream.”
I calmly pointed out (since I never get annoyed by ridiculously silly suggestions) that these were Jurassic Park mosquito bites, not girlie nicks from shaving.
“You might as well try it” he said. “Since you did that Medicine Cabinet Makeover and got rid of all the over-the-counter medications, it’s the only cream in the house”.
I picked up his crazy science experiment out of desperation and started dabbing in on.
By the time I got to the last mosquito bite some thirty seconds later, the first ones had stopped itching. And didn’t start itching again for over 4 hours. Say what?
I couldn’t believe it was so effective and long-lasting. It didn’t even contain the essential oils I personally would have picked for bug bites.
Just mix the five ingredients in a bowl and transfer to a container with a tight fitting lid (preferably glass as opposed to an old prescription bottle).
Here’s what’s in this anti-itch cream and why:
Unscented Lotion– if you don’t already have a favorite, here’s my favorite unscented lotion.
Coconut Oil–I love this stuff. Get coconut oil that’s extra-virgin and unrefined. It is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and soothing to the skin.
Clove EO–promotes circulation, powerful antioxidant properties, supports a healthy immune system.
Roman Chamomile EO–therapeutic and calming effect on the skin, soothes the systems of the body, supports healthy immune system function.
Peppermint EO–cooling to the skin, promotes respiratory health, alleviates occasional stomach upset.
And guess what?
All these ingredients combined make an amazing pain cream too.
We raise bees and on occasion and on more than one occasion a barefooted farm kid has stepped on one. Ouch!
We immediately apply some anti-itch cream and the pain is gone in under a minute.
Applied several more times and there’s very little swelling too. Fabulous!
I’ve since used this fabulous Itch Cream on myself and my family so many times and have always been amazed with the results.
If you and your family plan on spending any time outside this summer (and you will) then I highly recommend keeping this on hand. Your bug-bitten skin will thank you!
Place all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well for 1-2 minutes. Put cream in a glass container with a tight fitting lid. Apply to bug bites or any type of itchy skin as needed.
Yield: 2 oz.
Note: The recipe above is triple the size my hubby originally made for me. I definitely DO NOT want to run out of this stuff! But if you want to just test it out then here are the amounts for the smaller recipe:
1 tbsp. unscented lotion
1 tsp. extra-virgin coconut oil
10 drops clove essential oil
5 drops roman chamomile essential oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
