Welcome Outdoor Enthusiast!
So glad you stopped by my little neck of the woods.
Do you love being outside as much as I do? Do you love the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, the dirt under your feet, the…bugs biting your skin? Wait…what?
Yeah, no one loves that part. That’s why I (okay, my husband) created this amazing Anti-Itch Cream.
Once you try it, you’ll never leave home without it.
There are about a million things that can cause itchy skin, some obvious and some a complete mystery. My most recent scratch-fest wasn’t a mystery at all but caused by that trusted old stand-by, the mosquito. Well, I think.
I had gone on an evening hike with my family and the next day I started scratching more than a dozen mosquito bites all over my upper legs. At least, they looked like mosquito bites but on the hike I had worn long pants and a jacket.
How on earth did I get bit so many times with so many clothes on? I hadn’t seen any mosquitoes in the air during the hike and I had been indoors the rest of the day. Had I been bitten by something else?
Something worse? Fleas? Bed bugs?
Oh man, please don’t let it be bedbugs!
As I started fervently scratching my legs into oblivion, I needed some itch relief fast.
Then my husband handed me an old prescription bottle filled with a white mystery cream. “Use this” he said. “It’s my homemade after-shave cream.”
I calmly pointed out (since I never get annoyed by ridiculously silly suggestions) that these were Jurassic Park mosquito bites, not girlie nicks from shaving.
“You might as well try it” he said. “Since you did that Medicine Cabinet Makeover and got rid of all the over-the-counter medications, it’s the only cream in the house”.
I picked up his crazy science experiment out of desperation and started dabbing in on.
By the time I got to the last mosquito bite some thirty seconds later, the first ones had stopped itching. And didn’t start itching again for over 4 hours. Say what?
I couldn’t believe it was so effective and long-lasting. It didn’t even contain the essential oils I personally would have picked for bug bites.
Serendipity, indeed.
I’m all about simple recipes and my genius hubby certainly came up with one.
Just mix the five ingredients in a bowl and transfer to a container with a tight fitting lid (preferably glass as opposed to an old prescription bottle).
Here’s what’s in this anti-itch cream and why:
Unscented Lotion– if you don’t already have a favorite, here’s my favorite unscented lotion.
Coconut Oil–I love this stuff. Get coconut oil that’s extra-virgin and unrefined. It is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and soothing to the skin.
Clove EO–promotes circulation, powerful antioxidant properties, supports a healthy immune system.
Roman Chamomile EO–therapeutic and calming effect on the skin, soothes the systems of the body, supports healthy immune system function.
Peppermint EO–cooling to the skin, promotes respiratory health, alleviates occasional stomach upset.
And guess what?
All these ingredients combined make an amazing pain cream too.
We raise bees and on more than one occasion a barefooted farm kid has stepped on one. Ouch!
We immediately apply some anti-itch cream and the pain is gone in under a minute.
Applied several more times and there’s very little swelling too. Fabulous!
I’ve since used this fabulous Itch Cream on myself and my family so many times and have always been amazed with the results.
If you and your family plan on spending any time outside this summer (and you will) then I highly recommend keeping this on hand. Your bug-bitten skin will thank you!
Fabulous Anti-Itch Cream
3 tbsp. unscented lotion
1 tbsp. extra-virgin coconut oil
30 drops clove essential oil
15 drops roman chamomile essential oil
15 drops peppermint essential oil
Place all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well for 1-2 minutes. Put cream in a glass container with a tight fitting lid. Apply to bug bites or any type of itchy skin as needed.
Yield: 2 oz.
Note: The recipe above is triple the size my hubby originally made for me. I definitely DO NOT want to run out of this stuff! But if you want to just test it out then here are the amounts for the smaller recipe:
1 tbsp. unscented lotion
1 tsp. extra-virgin coconut oil
10 drops clove essential oil
5 drops roman chamomile essential oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
What biting insect is the worst where you live?
Gentle Joy says
This is great – essential oils work for so many things… and this time of year there are lots of irritants which cause itching…. like chigger bites – thank you for posting this. 🙂
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Your so welcome Gentle Joy! It seems like everything wants to bite me, maybe even chiggers–whatever those are. Doesn’t matter though cause I just slap some of this anti-itch cream on and itch is GONE! Thanks for stopping by!

gg1950 says
I have made this and it works great! Can anyone tell me if there’s go to liquid after a day or so. Should it be kept in the fridge
Fabulous Farm Girl says
You can keep all your essential oils and oil products at room temperature. I leave the anti-Itch cream in the medicine cabinet with no problems. If it gets a little too warm in your house it can separate a bit and if that happens just stir it back up.
Just FYI, essential oils do lose their efficacy in high heat (i.e. don’t keep them in your car in the summer). On the flip side, cold temperatures won’t cause any damage and they are perfectly fine at room temperature. Hope that helps.

You are so awesome to come up with these creations of yours and share them! I am going to mix up a batch of this asap
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Thanks Deb, you’re so sweet. Of course all the credit goes to the hubster and his homemade after-shave cream. I just LOVE that essential oils solve so many different issues. It still amazes me. Have a great week!

Janet Garman says
thank you! I plan to make this as soon as my next doTerra order arrives. I don’t have the clove oil yet. And chiggers are the worst. I get them if I don’t wear high socks and boots during the spring rainy season. ugh worst. Thanks so much for the recipe
Fabulous Farm Girl says
You’re welcome Janet! Clove oil is so useful and a must-have in your collection. Chiggers aren’t a problem where I live so you’ll have to let me know how this cream works on those nasty bites. Thanks for stopping by.

What a great thing to have on hand during the summer months. So, glad to know there is a safe version I can make at home.
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hi Brenna–not only can you make it at home but it works so much better than any anti-itch cream I’ve bought at the store. Thanks for stopping by!

Kathryn Claire says
Does this recipe have a “use by” date? I know some homemade things have a “use in x amount of weeks”
mikiodie says
“Use by” and expiration dates are a recent invention of the consumer retail industry to insure rotation of shelf stock and guarantee repeat sales. Properly stored, homemade products can last for years *provided* that you always remember to use clean hands to handle them. Lotions, being 70% water, are great media for bacteria, regardless of what antimicrobial agents you add to them. So, barring rancidity from storing your products too warm, or contamination, products like this can last for years.
Leah says
Thanks Mikiodie–you said it better than I could have. 🙂
–Leah
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hi Kathryn–thanks for your question. Let’s look at the individual ingredients. I’ve never experienced a lotion going bad so the unscented lotion should last for years. Extra-virgin coconut oil is very stable since it is unrefined and mostly saturated. After checking the websites of several companies that produce coconut oil, they all put an expiration date of 2 years but say that it will really last much longer. As far as the essential oils I can only speak of doTerra brand which are completely pure and unadulterated. Every single batch of doTerra oils is tested in 6 different ways by a 3rd party, independent lab ensuring that they are pure enough to take internally. The shelf life of the citrus oils (none of which are used in this recipe) is 3 years but all other doTerra oils have an indefinite shelf life. It’s interesting to note that frankincense found in Egyptian tombs was still viable. Only because of the expiration date assigned to the coconut oil will l say this will be good for 2 years but I personally would keep it much longer. Keep it out of heat and direct sunlight as heat can affect the efficacy of the essential oils. It may start to slightly separate if you didn’t mix it well enough. Just mix it up some more and you’re good to go. Hope that helps.

Tanya says
I am wondering if it is possible to use another oil rather than the coconut oil such as olive oil or canola or even vegetable I have friends and family that are allergic to coconut
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hi Tanya–thanks for your question. As it turns out, my husband’s original recipe for after-shave cream (from which this recipe is derived) used avocado oil, not coconut oil. You can get avocado oil quite inexpensively at Costco. You could also use olive oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil or sweet almond oil. I don’t recommend canola or vegetable oil because they are GMO and don’t have any real benefit to the skin. Because coconut oil is solid at room temperature it makes a slightly thicker cream than if you use a liquid oil but the effectiveness will be the same. Hope that helps.

Lisa says
Hi and thank you! I’m wondering if shea butter can be used instead of unscented lotion?
V says
Brilliant!! I seem to be a magnet for any biting insect. Every summer I’m in agony covered in fresh bites and scars of bites past (I’m a picker. I can’t help it. Please don’t judge!). Ha.
The hydrocortisone cream from the stores never seems to do more than take the edge off for a few minutes and I’m back to scratching again. Then I’ve tried tea tree oil which smells horrendous and does an ‘ok’ job.
I’m definitely going to try this. At this point, I’ll try anything.
The best thing I’ve ever used is an Australian product called Stingoes. I bought it when I was in Sydney and almost cried when I ran out. It’s very hard to find over here unless it’s imported. $$
Can’t wait to try your concoction!
V
Tanya says
OMG me 2 I can seriously be in a group of 30 other people covered head to toe in hat, hoodie sweater, jeans, boots, AND bug spray! and I am still the only one that walks away with no less then 10 new bites. it has become such a problem than I actually went looking for a reason for it turns out (at least according to what I found) that my blood type is to blame! (I’m type O neg) now I tell everyone that it really drives home the whole “universal donor” concept lol
Fabulous Farm Girl says
That’s awesome research Tanya. But while it may offer an explanation it doesn’t offer any relief after your “donation”. You definitely need to make this cream. It rendered my mosquito bites itch-free for almost 5 hours at a time. The power of doTerra essential oils is amazing! Thanks for stopping by!
–Leah
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hello V–sounds like you need to make this cream stat! You are so right about store bought anti-itch creams. They only take the edge off for a very short time so you have to reapply constantly. When I was covered in a dozen mosquito bites, this cream took the itch away entirely for almost 5 hours. When my son got stung by the bee on his toe it stopped the pain immediately. When he woke up in the morning it hurt a little so he applied it one more time. He didn’t have any pain after that and no swelling. In my experience, you can’t get these results with anything except doTerra essential oils. They have never ceased to amaze me. Have a great day!

this sounds amazing! this will be my first time using essential oils, do I need to store them in the frig or just store on shelf?
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hi Coni–thanks for stopping by! So happy that you are starting your journey with essential oils. They have changed my life! Essential oils do lose their efficacy in high heat (i.e. don’t keep them in your car in the summer). Cold temperatures won’t cause any damage and they are fine at room temperature. I keep all my essential oils and oil products at room temperature with no problem. If this Anti-Itch cream gets a bit to warm it can separate and if that happens just stir it back up. You are going to love it. Come back soon–I am always posting new ways you can use your oils. 🙂

Judy says
I have contact dermatitis and have used so many prescription creams and ointments that I lost count, not to mention Dr. visits I finally stopped using all of them and quit going to the Drs. they were no help. Will this cream help do you think before I buy all the EO’s or in your opinion should I add more ingredients? I know your are not a Dr. but I’m just asking for an opinion. Thank you
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hi Judy–thanks for your question. As you know, contact dermatitis is either caused by an irritant or something you’re allergic to coming in contact with your skin. Do you know what substance is causing the reaction? If you avoid the item it usually clears up in 2-4 weeks. It can be very painful and itchy and is very similar to eczema, although the cause is different. This cream would definitely help with the itching and pain, but another option to consider is my Miracle Eczema Salve. While I don’t know anyone who has used it for contact dermatitis, it has worked wonders for people with eczema and the symptoms are pretty much the same. It should help promote the healing of your condition as well as cut the itching and pain. That said, the EO’s in either product will provide relief without the side effects of prescription creams. Make sure you use the purest oils available to get the greatest benefit. As I stated in the post, I only use doTerra. If you are interested in ordering through me, shoot me an email and I can help you get a wholesale membership. I have seen EO’s work miracles on so many skin conditions that I really recommend you give it a shot. Good luck!

Lea says
I have had an unexplained itch on my left forearm for years. I have tried EVERYTHING! It was so bad at church this morning that I thought – I am going home and ripping my skin off – either that or burning it off. Thought better of those two thoughts, however. I discovered this site through pinterest. Thought – what can I lose? Well, unfortunately, I did not have all the ingredients. So, I mixed coconut oil, arnica gel, clove EO, calendula oil and mixed well. Rubbed some on and – OH MY – I have relief. It was almost instantaneous. I am going to my neighborhood health store to get the chamomile EO and unscented lotion. I seriously have not had this much relieve in I do not know how long.
Fabulous Farm Girl says
That’s awesome Lea! I’m so glad I was the inspiration that led you to get creative. I’m all for using what you have in a pinch and I’m impressed with your ingenuity. Keep experimenting and always use the highest quality ingredients you can find to get the best results. Have a fabulous week!

Dana says
Hi Leah! Years ago while cleaning up around our property, we had itchy bites on our legs and arms, after some research, we realized we had come in contact with chiggers. That may be what caused your itchy bites? They are more active in warmer temperatures and were in the leaves we handled that day. I thought the itch caused by the chiggers were worse than mosquito bites. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe for your anti-itch cream, it sounds wonderful!
fabulous Farm Girl says
You might be right, Dana! I couldn’t believe it was mosquitoes because no one saw any plus I was wearing long pants. And they did itch worse than mosquito bites. Whatever evil thing it was, it led to the discovery of the anti-itch cream so I am grateful. It is one of my favorite products and we use it all the time around here. You’re gonna love it. Have a fabulous week!

Gina says
I was just looking at this and think it looks great. Weird question for you, do you think this would be okay to use on dogs? I have a guy that it takes one bug bite and he is chewing and pulling his hair out. I am currently using coconut and lavender oil and it seems to help for a short amount of time.
Fabulous Farm Girl.com says
Hi Gina–thanks for your question. I personally haven’t used it on my dog but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. My only concern would be the clove oil as I have read that it is not good for dogs. I would replace the clove with lavender which is good for bug bites and I think you would have a great anti-itch/anti-pain cream for your dog. If you try it, please come back and let me know if it works so I can share it with my other dog-loving readers. Good luck!

That looks like a great recipe. I love anything with coconut oil. I’m also interested in the EO’s from DoTerra, I have a cousin who sells them, I just haven’t taken the plunge yet.
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hi Mitchypoo–thanks for stopping by. On behalf of your cousin and myself let me say “take the plunge and take it now!” Essential oils have changed my family’s healthcare entirely and entirely for the better. I cannot imagine what we did before doTerra. If you want more information I do weekly webinars on different essential oil topics and I encourage you to get on one. When it comes to the oils, education in power. Listen to your cuz and start your EO journey today. You will not regret it. (I think your cousin now owes me a commission when you sign up under her. LOL!). Have a great day.

I’m definitely trying this tomorrow!!! While I have many many “flavors” of Doterra I sadly do not have any chamomile. I’m going to use Lavevder in its place for now – unless you happen to have a different suggestion for a substitute?
Fabulous Farm Girl says
Hi Anne–thanks for stopping by! I think lavender would be a great substitute for roman chamomile as it is highly recommended for itching. Once you use it please come back and let me know how it works with the change. Have great day!

Or maybe Geranium?

Hello:) I am working on an anti-itch cream for my husbands face and beard area that itches him alot. In your recipe, it seems to be a lot of EO? 90 drops of EO in 4 TBLS or carrier oil, is that right? 🙂 Thanks!

Pam says
Have you ever used this for poison ivy? I have two kiddos that are extreme itchers and one that gets poison ivy just from looking at it. What if they have broken open the skin? I’ve tried some recipes with tea tree…nothing seems to keep them itch free for long, but I have not come across a recipe with clove before, so excited to try this.
Leah says
Hi Pam–thanks for stopping by. This should be a great remedy for poison oak/ivy. Clove is a good drawing salve and should take out the sting. Roman chamomile is recommended for poison ivy and peppermint is good for itchy skin. Lavender is also recommended so you could swap that out for either the peppermint or the RC. We haven’t used it on poison ivy but it has sure taken the itchiness and pain out of a lot of other stuff. Give it a try and let me know how it works.
–Leah
Amanda says
since Clove essential oil is not recommended for pregnancy would it still work if I swapped out the clove for lavender or even a Melaleuca/Lavender/Geranium mix. My skin is so dry and I’m just coming to the end of the second trimester. I need something to make it through the rest of this pregnancy.
Thank you,
Leah says
Hi Amanda and congrats on your pending arrival. How exciting! You can swap the clove with lavender which is a great skin oil and good for itching. Melaleuca and geranium are good too and I use those in my eczema skin salve. Since your skin is itchy due to extreme dryness you might want to try my Fabulous Skin Salve. It has coconut oil and olive oil along with lavender, cedarwood, melaleuca and frankincense. It’s a powerhouse for dry, irritated skin. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Nina says
Hello! I want to say I absolutely love the recipes and information on this site! I make everything I can from scratch for my family to ensure it is healthy and without harmful chemicals. However, with this recipe I was surprised to see the amount of EO that is put into this recipe! Your recipe States it’s a total of 4 tablespoons. But calls for 87 drops of EO. This is over double the amount that should be added! Essential oils should be measured to 1/2 a drop to 1 drop per ml. This recipe is just under 60mls and should call for no more than 60 drops of EO. I would hate to see a dedicated “do it yourselfer” get an EO overload! Was this an error?
Thank you so much!
Nina says
My apologies. It’s not double the amount. Typo. But still over safe measurements. Thanks!
Leah says
Hi Nina–thanks for your observation. I’ve had to edit a lot of my posts recently due to the FDA crackdown on EOs. After checking my recipe notebook, this one was messed up in the edit. Thanks for your help and it has been fixed.
Have a great week!

Vera says
Is it an all round the year cream ? Is it oily ? coz my city has very hot summer and it may lead to break outs.
Leah says
Hi Vera–I use this anti-itch cream year round with no problem. If you are in an extremely hot are you could keep it in the fridge. If it ever does start to separate you can just stir it back together. It’s not oily as the base is unscented lotion. Use a good quality lotion and breakouts shouldn’t be a problem. Hope that helps. 🙂

Terry Brodeen says
Do you think this would be safe to use on my little dog who is itching constantly?
Leah says
Hi Terry–thanks for your question. You could use this on your dog although application might be difficult. If you want to try just use a very small amount and see how it goes. Do you know what’s causing the itching? Is he itching a a particular spot or all-over? If it’s fleas then you might want to try the bug spray recipe instead. You could also put a drop of one of the flea-repelling oils (lavender, cedarwood, lemongrass) on his collar. Let me know what you try and how it goes. 🙂
–Leah
Terry Brodeen says
No, she doesn’t have fleas, just seems to be extra sensitive to the elements. I am the same way! I will give this a try on her tummy and see what happens and let you know.
I also have tried EVERYTHING to stop my scalp from itching, so I think I might try and rub some of this on and leave it for a few hours, then shampoo. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Jaclyn says
I’m not sure exactly wwhy but this blo is loading

or is it a problem on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.
Missy says
I see some comments on here regarding applying this to their dogs. Has anyone done this yet? Just wondering what the results were. I have a white pit-mix who is extremely allergic to everything! Both food and environmental. Grass, trees, pollen, you name it. We have tried just about everything. She is not very tolerant to fragrances so the oils are hard to use on her as she will do her best to wipe the off. But I am willing to give them another shot if I know she can get some relief.

I have only just come across your website and can I say congratulations to you on an absolutely great cream. I have recently had scabies and the itch was unbearable , I made this up 5 days ago and haven’t been itchy since. Last night did start to get itchy during the night ,put this cream on and it stopped immediately. I did not have chamomile so used geranium instead with absolutely no problem. I have now made up your skin salve and sleep salve. Thank you so much for this great site and info.

I really like the idea of using beeswax as well.

Over the weekend I found out that I’m allergic to an over the counter medication I started taking. I broke out in hives and itched REALLY bad. I couldn’t find an anti itch cream that lasted more than a few minutes, so I turned to Google. I found your blog and liked the recipe. I made a small batch today, applied it to my entire body and couldn’t believe how quickly I got relief. I made a larger batch so I didn’t have to keep making the cream. I absolutely LOVE your recipe. I have it in a jar so I can take it with me to work. Thank you for the itch relief 😊😊😊

Hi, I love your cream! What if I use German Chammomile? Is that just as good?
Deb says
Amazing! I’ve contact dermatitis for 2 weeks.
Prescription cortisone/pramozone was not helping with the extreme itching, and I had zero healing.
After using FOUR days …rash, swelling, scabs and blisters entirely gone!
Made the smaller batch. Fits perfectly in a 1 ounce jar. Keep in frig for cool magical relief. Apply as needed for relief. Used unscented Aveeno skin relief moisture repair cream instead of lotion. Bonus hands are softer!
Linda says
Is there anything that can be substituted for the clove oil? The smell is very strong and unpleasant to me.

Thank you so much for this recipe. I have a flea infestation in my apartment and flea bites all over my ankles. They were driving me nuts and I HAD to do something about it. I looked up online about quick and easy DIY anti-itch creams and your blog came up. I just whipped up a batch of this and applied it to my flea bites. It works instantly! No more itchies! I was at my wits end and didn’t know what to do about the itchies! THANK YOU! This is a lifesaver! Now to get rid of the fleas so they don’t keep biting me and my cat.
